FORMER Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla’s wife Bacoor City Mayor Lani Mercado will act as his proxy and file his certificate of candidacy for reelection as a member of the Senate.
Mercado, according to sources, is set to file the certificate of candidacy of his detained husband, next week, either on August 16 or 17.
Mercado will file the COC at the main office of the Commission on Elections in Intramuros, Manila.
Revilla, chairman of the once powerful Lakas Christian-Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD), is eyeing a Senate comeback even while still facing charges of corruption.
The former senator was arrested and has been under detention since June 2014 over his alleged involvement in the pork barrel scam.
Revilla allegedly pocketed P224 million worth of kickbacks by channeling his Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) allocations to the bogus non-government organizations controlled by businesswoman Janet Lim Napoles, the alleged mastermind of the scam.
Despite Revilla’s situation, Lakas President Ferdinand Martin Romualdez said Revilla is still “one of the most qualified senatorial aspirants.”
Skeptics however question how Revilla could boost his stock in the elections without leaving his cell to campaign.
