Lawmaker in NAIA brouhaha hospitalized

CONTROVERSIAL Party-list Representative John Bertiz was not able to attend the investigation of the House ethics committee yesterday because he was rushed to the hospital two days ago.

Bertiz, representative of ACTS-OFW party-list, was the solon seen in a CCTV footage refusing  to undergo security check upon entering the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 last weekend.

His colleagues from the Minority bloc led by Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez confirmed that he was confined in St. Lukes after complaining of chest pain.

“He (Bertiz) will be given fair treatment in the ethics committee, especially now he is in the hospital. Naka-confine siya since yesterday,” Suarez said.

Deputy Minority Leader Lito Atienza also said Bertiz suffered from hypertension or high blood pressure due to the criticisms he has been receiving since the incident in NAIA.

Another member of the Minority Rep. Anthony Bravo of COOP-NATCCO said that Bertiz has a heart problem.

In fact, two years ago he underwent heart bypass procedure.

“He underwent five heart bypass (operations), and he needs two more because he has seven damaged arteries,” Bravo said.

Meanwhile, Suarez assured the public that the group will not condone Bertiz’s misconduct.

“To us, this incident is a reminder that as members of the House of Representatives, we must adhere to the Code of Conduct established by the Rules of the House under Rule XIX and to Republic Act No. 6713 or the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees,” Suarez said.

Bertiz earlier apologized for his “uncalled for” action but insisted that there was a Chinese-looking passenger ahead of him that did not remove his shoes also.

Likewise, Bertiz blamed his annual “monthly period” for his conduct at the NAIA and his statement drew the ire of women’s groups particularly the Gabriela party-list.
