Lawyers group’s plea nixed

THE Court of Appeals (CA) turned down the request of the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (NUPL) for the issuance of a protection order against alleged harassment by the military of their members.

The CA denied the prayer of NUPL for the issuance of temporary protection order (TPO) as it granted Solicitor General Jose Calida’s motion to dismiss the plea for lack of merit.

The CA held that petitioners led by NUPL president Edre Olalia failed to establish the necessity to protect them from supposed threats by the military.

“After a careful study of the allegations in the petition, the respective arguments of the parties, and the evidence so far presented, the Court finds no basis to grant the TPO,” read the ruling.
