SUSPECTED New People’s Army guerrillas on Thursday evening burned two heavy equipment owned by a construction company in Manjuyod, Negros Oriental following the reported failure of its owners to heed their demand for revolutionary tax, the Police Regional Office 7 reported yesterday.

Torched by the heavily-armed suspected leftist rebels at 9 p.m. Thursday were one backhoe and a road roller owned by the Philsouth Construction in Barangay Bolisong, Manjuyod municipality, said PRO7 director, Chief Superintendent Debold M. Sinas.

The official said an investigation showed that prior to the arson attack, the gunmen flagged down a security guard of the Ceres Liner who was on his way to the city proper. The guard whose name was withheld told local police investigators that about 40 armed men forced him to stop as he was passing by in the area.

It turned out that the gunmen have burned the two heavy equipment parked along the roadside. Sinas said that the heavy equipment were being used in an ongoing road widening project in the area.

He said the guard told officers of the Manjuyod Municipal Police Station that the armed men allowed him to leave unharmed after shouting ‘Mabuhay ang NPA.’

He said local policemen are still investigating the incident.
