A VETERAN solon expressed support for a special session saying there is a need to approve contingency funds or supplemental budget to address the coronavirus disease or COVID-19.
In a statement, Cavite Rep. Elpidio Barzaga Jr. said being the president of the National Unity Party (NUP), he is willing to represent the party members during the session.
According to Barzaga, it s just proper to relax the rules of the plenary like limiting the attendees in order to maintain social distancing and to avoid the spread of the disease.
“In the service of the Filipino people and during times of national health emergency of international concern, as a veteran lawyer, I believe that the House of Representatives can relax its rules,” Barzaga said.
“The interest of the nation is paramount. Aanhin pa ang damo kung patay na ang kabayo?” he added.
The chairman of the House Committee on Environment and Natural Resources said House members wary of their safety can just send their votes.
“I suggest that voting be done through short messaging system or text. Papaano mo naman papupuntahin physically sa House of Representatives ang members na nasa mga probinsiyang malalayo, iyung nasa Bicol, Visayas, at Mindanao?” Barzaga stressed.
“As President of the National Unity Party (NUP) party, I can represent and manage the ‘long-distance’ plenary participation of my colleagues in the party,” he also said.
Meanwhile, Barzaga said if a House member questions that before Supreme Court, his motion will surely not prosper.
Barzaga appealed to the media to also give equal prominence to the positive developments on COVID-19 to inspire people to unite, contribute to the global fight against the dreaded disease and suppress panic.
“Let’s put emphasis on patients whose conditions are improving or have recovered from COVID-19 and don’t forget the statement of the World Health Organization (WHO) that 80 percent of infected patients experience mild illness and eventually recover from the disease,” BArzaga said,
