THE Department of Agriculture has assured poultry and livestock raisers in the Davao Region that a feed mill for backyard hog raisers and a facility to process chicken wastes into organic fertilizer will soon be established.
DA Secretary Emmanuel Piñol made the commitment during a forum with the small poultry and livestock stakeholders who sought the help of the DA in addressing problems which they said stunted the growth of the sector in the region.
After the poultry and livestock farmers presented their problems, Piñol committed to support the sector by endorsing a P100-million loan by poultry raisers for the establishment of a broiler and layer hatchery facility to supply the chicks needed by small farmers.
Piñol said the DA will endorse the loan application to the Land Bank of the Philippines and the Development Bank of the Philippines.
The DA also committed for the establishment of a feed mill facility for backyard hog raisers amounting to P10-million and the establishment of an Organic Fertilizer Processing Facility which would process chicken dung and other animal wastes into fertilizer to address the problem of waste disposal and at the same time support organic farmers in the region. The facility is estimated to cost P10 million.
Other commitments given were a loan fund of P3-million for the dairy cattle farmers of Malagos, Davao City to be used as their working capital to buy back the offsprings of the cows the association dispersed to its members and breeding materials for both meat and dairy goats which will be acquired through the PL480 funds from the US Department of Agriculture.
“At the end of the meeting, the stakeholders expressed their thanks to President Rody Duterte for the loaning program being implemented by the DA which they said directly helps them,” Piñol said.
He added that the loan funds will be made available to the Davao Poultry and Livestock farmers in the First Quarter of 2019 through the Agricultural Credit Policy Council (ACPC).
