Price control in calamity areas urged

A PARTY-LIST solon is urging the government to ensure that prices in the provinces hit by tropical depression Usman are under control.

1-CARE Rep. Roman Uybarreta asked Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to impose price controls on fuel and other basic commodities in the Bicol Region and in Eastern  Visayas.

“I  ask President Duterte to order the Department of Trade and Industry and Department of Interior and Local Government to implement price controls for at least six months to allow affected residents to recover,” Uybarreta said.

Uybarreta said local prices should stay at levels “… at least before Usman entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility, but the DTI should also shave off the Christmas effect on price increases when it determines the price ceilings.”

“Bicolanos and Warays should be spared from the impact of the increase in the fuel excise tax for 2019, as well as the effects of limited supplies because of Usman’s disruption of daily lives,” the House Energy Committee Vice Chairman added.

Earlier, Albay Governor Al Francis Bichara and Camarines Sur Governor Migz Villafuerte placed their respective provinces under a state of calamity after Usman caused landslides and widespread flooding.

Albay province was placed under a state of calamity through a special organized session by members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan after the province suffered severe flooding, landslides and several infrastructure damage due to heavy rains.
