THE Sandiganbayan has cleared former Philippine National Police chief General Alan Purisima of perjuryis in connection with his Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN) from 2006 to 2000 and from 2011 to 2014.
While he is acquitted from perjury cases, it can be recalled that last year the Sandigan second division denied Purisima’s demurrer to evidence because the prosecution’s evidence, if not rebutted, can sustain a guilty verdict.
The former PNP chief served under the administration of former President Benigno Aquino III.
They were involved in the botched Mamasapano operation.
About 44 members of the Special Action Force (SAF) were killed by the joint forces of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF).
Despite the suspension from the office, Purisima coordinated with Aquino in planning and carrying out Operation Exodus.
He was dismissed in 2011 by the Office of the Ombudsman for allegedly committing graft over an anomalous P100 million contract for the delivery of gun licenses in 2011.
The operation led to the neutralization of international terrorist and bomb-maker Zulkifli bin Hir alias Marwan:
Just recently, Sandiganbayan junked the usurpation of authority charges against Purisima and then-Special Action Forces (SAF) chief Getulio Napeñas as the evidence presented by the prosecutors were insufficient.
