Right person for speaker

February 28, 2019

NO to return of Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez as Speaker of the House.

Reacting to a Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) statement on regaining the speakership in the 18th Congress, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said Congress must try other leaders.

“Siguro yung nasubukan na at (ang) hindi naging successful huwag na lang siguro,” Duterte-Carpio said in an interview after her party’s campaign sortie in Pateros.

The presidential daughter founded and chairs the Hugpong ng Pagbabago which is campaigning for 13 senatorial candidates.

While she respects the PDP-Laban decision, she urged the party to shorten the list of its candidates for Speaker.

“Nakita ko yung listahan ng PDP siguro dapat iklian nila kasi masyadong mahaba. Tinatawag nilang short list mahaba naman. Iklian nila kasi madami ding interested na mas pwede,” Duterte-Carpio said.

She proposed to the party to include in the list interested contenders such as incoming Taguig City Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano and incoming Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez.

Cayetano belongs to the Nacionalista Party while Romualdez is the President of Lakas-CMD.

Duterte-Carpio was behind the ouster of Alvarez as Speaker of the House in the 17th Congress and helped former President now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo take over in the remaining months of Alvarez’s term.

Duterte-Carpio and Alvarez had a falling out when the latter questioned the Mayor over her forming a political group, the Hugpong ng Pagbabago, which was perceived as a threat to the PDP-Laban.

The PDP-Laban recently issued a list of possible contenders aside from Alvarez. They are Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco; San Juan Rep. Ronald Zamora; Cavite Reps. Alex Advincula and Bambol Tolentino; Malabon Rep. Ricky Sandoval; Pampanga Rep. Dong Gonzales; Leyte Rep. Lucy Torres and South Cotabato Rep. Ferdinand Hernandez.

Among these names, there is talk that Duterta-Carpio’s bet is Velasco.  Rep. Velasco is accompanying Mayor Sara in the campaign sorties.

So far, President Duterte is supporting the PDP Laban candidates.

“PDP-Laban is the defending champion in the House and we have all-star candidates for the post of the Speaker,” the statement said.
