TWO House leaders on Tuesday urged Health Sec. Francisco Duque III to help local government units (LGUs) expeditiously set up their own screening centers for coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) nationwide to boost President Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte’s fight against the dreaded disease.
This developed as House Majority Leader and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez and Tingog party-list Rep. Yedda Marie K. Romualdez welcomed the impending onsite assessment by the composite team from the Department of Health (DoH) and the Regional Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) of the first testing center for COVID-19 in Eastern Visayas.
“We call on the DoH to assist LGUs working on the establishment of their own testing centers to arrest the COVID-19 pandemic. The guidance and expertise of our health officials are needed to ensure that testing centers are compliant with the standards,” said the Romualdez couple.
“The country needs more testing centers in different regions because of the urgency to stem the COVID-19 threat,” the Romualdezes stressed. “We are upbeat that the DoH will approve our proposed testing center in Eastern Visayas,” they said, referring to the proposed COVID-19 screening center at the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center (EVRMC) along the Magsaysay Boulevard in Tacloban City.
The RT Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) machine, a cutting-edge diagnostic technology, has been ordered by Majority Leader Romualdez for the proposed testing center.
Last March 27, the self-assessment and risk assessment of the proposed facility was completed based on the RITM and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines while the results of the assessment were submitted by DoH in the region.
“We’re praying hard that we make it beyond this hurdle at the soonest possible time,” said Tingog, an Eastern Visayas-based party-list group, which is part of the technical working group (TWG) for the testing center.
