LEYTE Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez has accepted the Majority Leader position.
This is according to Albay Rep. Joey Salceda, following a meeting with some lawmakers who supported Romualdez for the speakership.
In a press briefing, Salceda said some 72 solons, who attended a meeting of the incoming lawmakers, unanimously agreed to support the decision of President Rodrigo Duterte on the speakership issue.
President Duterte endorsed the term-sharing of Taguig City Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano and Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco as Speaker of the 18th Congress.
President Duterte likewise said his choice for the Majority Leader is Romualdez.
“Simple lang napag-usapan namin, with respect to the choice of Speaker we will follow the President no ifs, no buts, no exempt and no unless. Number 2, we asked Martin to do his job, develop robust and dynamic relationship with the Speaker and number 3 is they should fight for the agenda of the President,” Salceda said.
“We unanimously agreed to follow the wish of the President to follow the Speakership, and Martin is accepting the position of the Majority Leader,” Salceda added.
Meanwhile, Salceda said they expect Romualdez to also lobby for the committees they want to get.
“To be practical about it, we also ask Martin to still fight for the aspirations of those who supported him with respect to the committee membership, and chairmanships, as far as possible,” he added.
When asked if they accepted the decision of the President not to include Romualdez in the term sharing, Salceda said they have.
“Naka adjust na kami yesterday, tanggap na agad. Hindi naman as if we lost heaven, so we still got a very important position. You know the work horse of the House is Majority Leader, if you want to get things done with respect to the bills, laws passed, if you are really serious about the priority bills, I think the Majority Leader is the very good position,” the solon pointed out.
Meanwhile, the Party-list Coalition Foundation Inc. led by its President 1PACMAN Rep. Mikee Romero also expressed support for the decision of the President.
Romero said they will meet Cayetano and present the list of committees they will lobby for.
