HOUSE Minority Leader and Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez yesterday urged the incoming members of the 18th Congress to elect an experienced, competent, and compassionate Speaker who is acceptable to the majority of lawmakers and can push the legislative agenda of President Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte.
Suarez said Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez is the most qualified candidate for the Speakership.
“Congressman Romualdez has a long track record of good leadership,” said Suarez at a news conference even as he maintained that Romualdez has the edge over the other candidates for Speaker.
Earlier, Suarez bared that Romualdez’s manifesto of support has reached the “magic number” of signatories for him to win the Speakership race.
He then said that more than 153 congressmen have already signed the manifesto of support for Romualdez, a clear indication that he is the emerging favorite candidate of incoming congressmen.
Suarez said he believes Romualdez can maintain his numbers.
“Knowing how Congressman Martin Romualdez plays his game -- a very focused and workaholic leader, public servant -- I am comfortable he will maintain his number,” said Suarez.
Romualdez is the president of the Philippine Constitution Association (Philconsa) and the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD). He was the House Independent Bloc leader of the previous 16th Congress.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government from the Ivy League school in Cornell University, and a Certificate of Special Studies in Administration and Management from Harvard University. He also earned his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the Philippines.
