THE Senate is now waiting for the official letter from President Rodrigo Duterte regarding his request to extend martial law in Mindanao up to the end of 2019.
Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III announced that the President might call for a joint session of Congress next week to tackle the martial law extension.
“He sent me a message saying he might call for it on Wednesday, December 12. But nothing is concrete until I receive his letter,” Sotto said in a message to reporters.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines will give senators a briefing on their recommendation on Monday, Sotto also said.
“Monday morning may briefing kami from AFP. I'm still waiting for the President's letter re joint session,” he said.
Armed Forces chief General Carlito Galvez earlier said they will recommend that martial law in Mindanao be extended for a year to help the military in its anti-terrorism efforts.
President Duterte, through Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, yesterday announced that he will seek the help of Congress to extend southern region martial law until the end of 2019.
