Former Presidential Adviser for Political Affairs Secretary Francis Tolentino yesterday underscored the need for more road safety measures following a tragic accident in General Santos City  last week which led to 11 fatalities and several others seriously injured.

The accident occurred last Monday afternoon along the national highway in Barangay Batomeleng. The fatalities include an infant and two children, according to City Police Station 8 Chief Insp. Yul Hilado.

“Nakikiramay po tayo doon. May mga bata ring namatay. Walang may gusto ‘non eh. Ang pupuntahan lang nila ay isang masayang event -- kasalan. Tapos nauwi sa isang ganitong aksidente na wala namang may kagustuhan,” said Tolentino, also former Metro Manila Development Authority chairman.

He also emphasized the need for comprehensive training for drivers before buying vehicles and during renewal of their licenses, adding that seminars should include review of safety regulations as not everyone took formal training in driving schools.

Tolentino added that road signage along highways should be regularly updated as well.

He also urged local officials to invest heavily in tougher road safety measures to effectively reduce road accidents.
