FRUSTRATED in his first run for the mayoralty in the 2016 elections, former San Juan vice mayor Francisco Javier ‘Francis’ Zamora is expected to win the city’s top post if the elections were held today.
Based on the result of pre-poll survey conducted by ‘PUBLiCUSAsia Inc.’ last March 16 and March 17, Zamora, the mayoral bet of the administration party, PDP-Laban, was shown to be safely ahead with 59.43 percent of the result against incumbent San Juan vice mayor Janelle Estrada, who garnered 40.57 percent.
Estrada is the daughter of former senator Jinggoy Estrada, who is also campaigning to regain his seat in the Upper Chamber.
After the 2016 elections, Zamora filed an electoral protest against outgoing mayor, Guia Gomez, before the Commisssion on Elections (Comelec) but the case remains unresolved up to this day, when the midterm polls is just several weeks away.
Former Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel, PDP-Laban head, has welcomed Zamora’s entry into the ranks of the party and even described as a “strategic decision” Zamora’s second try for the San Juan mayoralty, with the endorsement of President Rodrigo Duterte, the party’s titular head and chairman.
His victory is seen as ending the decades-old domination of the family of former president and now Manila mayor Joseph Estrada in the political life of the city.
