1 dies, 5 seriously injured as tanker plows into shop

BULA, Camarines Sur -- An Elf truck-tanker loaded with palm oil plowed into a vulcanizing shop/residence here on Monday, killing shop owner Rodel Ibanes and seriously injuring his live-in partner, Melody Vibares, 33, and their four children.

According to Bula MPS Police Captain Reynaldo Balindan, the tanker driver Cornicio Bernardino evaded an incoming vehicle after overtaking two motorcycles at Sitio Banasi, Barangay Pawili here at around 5 a.m. and hit the shop.

Ibanes died on the spot after he was run over by the tanker while Vibares and her four children -- Romy, 4; Paul John, 6; Javier, 5; and Princess, 8 -- suffered serious injuries.

Bernardino, whose driver’s license was already confiscated by authorities in Malabon, Metro Manila, is now facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and multiple injuries, including damage to properties.

Balindan also said local residents caught stealing palm oil from the wrecked tanker owned by Tungal Trading based in Makati City have been charged with robbery.

Earlier, another fatal accident which also claimed the lives of five people and injured 14 others was reported in Barangay Bikal, Libmanan, Camarines Sur.

Police Lt. Col. Pobleo Maestrado said the driver of the jeepney which collided with a dump truck, George Montanez, died on the spot. A 50-year-old woman and three minors also died.
