BATANGAS City -- At least 100 houses were destroyed in a fire that hit a residential area in Bgy. Sta. Clara here Saturday evening.
Bureau of Fire investigator SF02 Hernandez said the fire started around 5:30 p.m. at the house owned by Evangelina Rosales, of Sitio Ibaba, located near the terminal of the Port of Batangas City.
Barangay chairman Derick Arago and some barangay officials who rushed to the area saw some of the residents jump into the waters to escape the fire that spread too quickly .
The fire that reached a general alarm by 7 p.m. was declared put out around 1 a.m.
The Batangas Chapter of the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) deployed three ambulances, a rescue van, and a 6×6 truck to the area around 6:20 p.m., according to a tweet by Philippine Red Cross chair Sen. Richard Gordon.
No one was hurt in the incident, but many of the residents were not able to save any of their belongings.
The affected residents are now staying at a public school in the area.
The BFP said the fire, that was caused by a faulty electrical wiring, did not reach the port.
The Batangas City administrator said RORO vessels and ferries at the Batangas Pier remained normal.
