CAMP BGEN OSCAR M FLORENDO, La Union —The Police Regional Office 1 reported yesterday the arrest of 173 persons in an anti-illegal gambling campaign operation in Region 1 and tagged a graduate of the Phil. Military Academy as an alleged justeng operator.
In his report to PNP chief Police General Archie Francisco F. Gamboa, Chief, Police Brigadier General Rodolfo S Azurin, Jr., PRO1 Regional Director, confirmed that the PNP’s
Anti-Illegal Gambling Plan “Operations High Roller was conducted in nine cities and municipalities of Pangasinan and resulted in the arrest of 173 persons and confiscation of P862,665 bet money.
Azurin said the apprehended violators failed to present pertinent documents authorizing the operation of STL and Card Games in their municipalities.
The PRO1 official added there were no PCSO representatives present to prove the operation was legal.
Azurin also identified the alleged operator of the illegal number games (jueteng) in Pangasinan as Efren Ricafort Fajardo, incumbent Barangay Captain of Bgy. Sagud Bahley, San Fabian, Pangasinan.
Azurin said Fajardo was a graduate of PMA Class of 1993 and a former member of Philippine Air Force (PAF).
In his message, Azurin said the massive crackdown is part of the PRO1’s initiative to stop illegal gambling in Region 1 in response also to the President Rodrigo Duterte’s directive to end such activites in the country.
“Our police will continuously conduct relentless operations like this to prevent the proliferation of illegal gambling activities,” Azurin added.
Since the declaration of Enhanced Community Quarantine last March 16, 2020 in Luzon, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office suspended all gaming activities to include Small Town Lotteries and Peryahan ng Bayan which was also concurred by the IATF.
The violators are presently under the custody of the respective police stations where they were apprehended for the filing of appropriate charges, added Azurin.
