18 brave N. Samar cops get award from Albayalde

PHILIPPINE National Police chief Director General Oscar D. Albayalde yesterday pinned the PNP Medalya ng Kadakilaan (PNP Heroism Medal) to 18 members of the Victoria Municipal Police Station in Northern Samar who drove away a group of heavily-armed New People’s Army guerrillas who attacked them last Thursday killing three of the gunmen and capturing an 18-year-old rebel.

The awardees were Lieutenant Eladio Alo, Chief Senior Master Sergeant Aimee Lutze Cadiente, Chief Master Sergeant Marlon Ordonia, Senior Master Sergeant Arnold Cabacang, Staff Sergeants Ramil Ramosa, Raul Francisco Jr. and Brande Esquillon, Corporals Bryan Ed Penaflor, Jaykari Laurio, Eddie Edwin Diaz, Tracy Silagan and Jake Salesa and Patrolmen Ronnel Goco, Marlon Estropigan, Errol Montopar, Geral Casyao and Jhonar Cris Bernades.

Gordo and Cabacang were also given the PNP Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting after they were wounded in defending their station, said Police Regional Office 8 director Brigadier General Dionardo B. Carlos.

“I conferred today the prestigious award of Medalya ng Kadakilaan to the Victoria policemen led by Lieutenant Alo in recognition of their individual acts of courage and heroism against an overly superior number of enemy thus living up to the undying battlecry of the police service: “Always outnumbered, but never outfought,” Albayalde said.

He added that the 18 were given interim medals since the PNP promotions board is deliberating on their spot promotion.

“They have shown a very good example to the rest of the force. Actually, their simulation exercise is a very good practice. They also occupied the high ground to repel the enemy attack,” said Albayalde, who also paid tribute to Patrolman Wilfredo Padawil, of the 1502nd Maneuver Company of the Cordillera 15th Regional Mobile Force Battalion, who was killed in an encounter with NPA gunmen last Friday in Bauko, Mountain Province.  Cpl. Eirphil Lapniten was also wounded in the same clash.

Carlos said that the 18-year-old captured rebel is still undergoing a “tactical interrogation.”

“We are checking some information relayed by the young rebel,”Carlos said .

Albayalde described the captured rebel as a “student from Calbayog City”and renewed his appeal to parents to be watchful of their kids who go on long vacation in the countryside not knowing that they are already “immersing” with the NPA.
