TWO barangay captains and two supporters of a mayoralty candidate in Mindanao were killed in three separate gun attacks in the region on Saturday.
Two of the victims identified as Edgardo Viñas, a 49-year-old chairman of Barangay Dapaon in Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte; and Ibrahim Ungad, head of Bgy. New Labangan in Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur, were gunned down in separate attacks in Western Mindanao.
Police Regional Office 9 director Brigadier General Emmanuel Luis D. Licup said he has ordered a thorough investigation into the shooting incidents which came a week ahead of the May 13 polls.
An initial investigation showed that Viñas, also the president of the Association of Barangay Captains in Sindangan municipality, was shot dead around 11:58 a.m. Saturday as he was presiding over a meeting at the ABC session hall in Bgy. La Roche.
Witnesses said shortly after he adjourned the session, an unidentified gunman appeared and shot the victim before fleeing on board a black motorcycle. The assassin, who was wearing a red helmet, was last seen escaping towards Teaño Street in Goleo, Sindangan.
Licup said the victim died while being taken to the Sindangan District Hospital.
On the other hand, Ungad, a resident of Purok Caimito in Tuburan District, Pagadian City, was shot dead by two unidentified suspects in front of his residence around 6:45 p.m. Saturday.
The suspects were armed with a 12-gauge shotgun and fled on a motorbike towards Bgy. Tiguma.
Ungad was brought to the Hofileña Hospital where he was declared dead upon arrival.
Licup has ordered the Sindangan town police and the Pagadian City police , headed by Major Domingo Murillo II and Lieutenant Colonel Alvin Saguban respectively, to thoroughly investigate the incidents and track down the killers.
Meanwhile, in Benito, Surigao del Norte, police are investigating the killing of two campaign leaders of a local mayoral candidate around 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
The victims, one of them identified as Nicomedis Rivas, were on a motorcycle when they were attacked by the suspects in Bgy. Bongdo.
A local policeman identified as Staff Sergeant Dan Dumanjog was also wounded in the incident.
The two victims were allegedly supporters of Mayor Rushford Dedumo, whose wife is seeking the local mayoralty post.
The PRO13, headed by Brig. Gen. Gilbert DC Cruz, is investigating the incident.
