CAMP Gen. Mateo Capinpin, Tanay, Rizal -- Troops from the Army’s 1st Infantry Battalion (1IB) overran a New People’s Army encampment in Bgy. Tubahan, Rosario, Batangas, on Monday.
Lt. Col. Jonathan Manio, 1IB commanding officer, said the troops were conducting focused military operation after receiving verified intelligence reports and information from concerned citizens of the NPA presence and its alleged extortion activities in the village.
While scouring the area, they chanced upon 10 armed men believed to be members of the NPA Platoon Galaxy, Kilusang Larangan Guerilla Silangan, Sub-Regional Military Area (SRMA) 4C of the Southern Tagalog Regional Party Committee under Janice Javier, alias Salma, triggering a 30-minute gunfight, wounding two soldiers, identified as Cpl. Richard Solayao and Pfc. Jeffrey Balangoy, who are now in stable condition after given medical treatment.
On the other hand, the rebels also suffer injuries as shown by the traces of blood at the battle site. The troops seized the enemy camp after the rebels withdrew, bringing along their wounded comrades.
The troops found an M-16 rifle, two anti-personnel mines, three bandoleers, five jungle packs and subversive documents at the scene.
Brig. Gen. Arnulfo Marcelo Burgos Jr., commander of the 202nd Brigade, said the encounter was another major setback to the remaining NPAs in Batangas.
