3 die, 77 hurt in bus-truck collision in Quezon

ATIMONAN, Quezon — Three persons on Monday died while 77 others were injured after a Bicol-bound tourist bus collided head on with an Isuzu wing truck in Bgy. Santa Catalina,  Atimonan, Quezon.

Truck driver Benedict  Belencio, 29; his helper Michael Gerona, 28; and an unidentified bus passenger died on the spot, according to Quezon police director Sr. Supt. Ramil Montilla.

Montilla said all injured passengers were rushed to  Doña Martha Memorial District Hospital  and to Nuestra Seniora Delos Angeles General Hospital for treatment. Some of the wounded victims were transferred to another hospital  in Lucena City.

Town police commander Chief Insp. Michael Encio said the AMV Travel and Tours bus driven by Maximo Leoriego, 61, overtook another bus  on the descending portion of the highway in Bgy. Santa Catalina at 6 p.m. on Monday.

The speeding bus crashed head on with the ascending truck.

Leoriego surrendered to responding policemen who immediately cordoned the area and rushed the victims to the hospital.

The bus driver was detained at the Atimonan police custodial facility and will be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and physical injury.
