THREE children who went out for a swim on Tuesday drowned in a fishpond in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna.
Sta. Rosa City police chief Supt. Eugene Orate identified the victims as Stephanie Cardena, 11; Alyza Urisantos, 11; and Cathy Macabuyoc, 10, all residents of Sitio Iraq, Bgy. Macabling in the city.
The drowning occurred at 3 p.m. on Tuesday but was reported only to the police at 9 a.m. yesterday.
The three kids, who were friends, decided to swim in a fishpond at a vacant lot owned by the Tan family at Sitio Iran in Bgy. Macabling.
Urisantos’ 9-year old brother said he saw her sister and the two others pulling each other until the three started to drown one by one.
Barangay officials and rescuers pulled the three kids out of water and rushed them to the Sta. Rosa Community Hospital, where the three were declared dead on arrival.
Rescuers said the three were found underwater, their arms around each other.
A barangay official said the place was a private property and no one was allowed to enter.
It was the second drowning in the fishpond reported to the police.
Village officials said despite the strict security measures, children were able to sneak in and take a dip in the fishpond.
