FIGHTING on Thursday erupted between a group of patrolling Army soldiers and a band of heavily-armed New People’s Army guerrillas in Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro resulting in the killing of three rebels, Police Regional Office 4-B director Brig. Gen. Tomas Apolinario Jr. said yesterday.
The official said that members of the Charlie Company of the Army’s 4th Infantry Battalion were on patrol in Sitio Kalibang in Bgy. Panaytayan in Mansalay municipality 3:10 p.m. on Thursday when they encountered about 40 gunmen.
The gunbattle led in the killing of three suspected rebels whose bodies were recovered at the site along with three M-16 automatic rifles and one AK-47 assault rifle.
Apolinario said that local policemen have set up checkpoints to help the Army intercept the rest of the guerrillas who were last seen fleeing on foot towards the nearby Sitio Mawan.
