SEVEN suspected members of the “Baklas-Bubong” robbery group yesterday were killed in an encounter with the police in Agoncillo, Batangas.
Provincial police PIO chief Sr. Supt. Kermin Amor Umali Cabrales said they are verifying the names of the slain suspects.
According to reports, the suspects were responsible for the robbery of feed mills, grocery and motorcycle shops in Batangas.
Batangas police director Sr. Supt. Edwin Aguilan Quilates said the shootout occurred in Bgy. Banyaga in Agoncillo municipality at 4:45 a.m. yesterday.
Quilates said personnel of the Agoncillo Municipal Police Station received a telephone call from the Laurel Municipal Police Station saying a white Toyota Hi-Ace Van with plate no. TIH-344 ignored a checkpoint in Bgy. Berinayan, Laurel town.
The Laurel police said the suspects rammed the checkpoint barrier and fled.
Members of the Agoncillo police were immediately dispatched to intercept the fleeing suspects.
At around 4:45 a.m. yesterday, the reported van was seen approaching and was flagged down by police personnel manning a checkpoint in Bgy. Banyaga.
Instead of pulling over, the driver of the van stepped on the gas while his cohorts fired at the police operatives.
A brief chase ensued until the suspects were cornered by another patrol team of the Agoncillo police station.
An exchange of gunfire left the suspects dead.
No members of the Agoncillo police were hurt in the clash but the patrol vehicle took gunshots.
Responding members of the Scene of the Crime Office recovered from the slain suspects five guns, including a rifle, while found inside the vehicle were an electric grinder and cutting tools.
