PLARIDEL, Quezon -- Character actor Jose de Andres, popularly known as Nonong “Bangkay” in the Philippine movies, was found dead hanging in a cottage at a beach resort in Bgy. Tumagay, here, before dawn yesterday.
“He (De Andres) was no longer breathing when discovered by Larry Liwanag, caretaker of Tumagay Beach Resorts at 3:45 a.m,” said Quezon police director Senior Supt. Osmundo de Guzman.
De Guzman said De Andres was the one managing the resort owned by his good friend, Bernard Tumagay, the town mayor.
Town police director Senior Insp. Rodel Fortunado said the victim was found hanging from the ceiling of a cottage on a rope looped around his neck. He said a suicide note was found by employees of the resort.
In a phone interview, Fortunado said the suicide was triggered by the actor’s sickness.
He said the victim has been suffering from emphysema and that was his big problem.
Emphysema is a long term, progressive desease of the lungs that primarily causes shortness of breath due to over-inflation of the alveoli (air sacs in the lung).
Fortunado said De Andres personally told him his sickness the first and last time they met on Friday.
“Actually, nagkakwentuhan pa kami last Friday ng biktima. Nabanggit nga niya sa akin ang sakit niyang emphysema kaya madami siyang gamot na iniinom,” said Fortunado.
He said the victim’s body was processed by personnel of Quezon Provincial Crime Laboratory Office and will be autopsied.
De Andres, a native of Masbate, earned his moniker for always playing the role of “bangkay” in the movies.
