LUCENA City -- A bloody encounter between policemen and a suspected drug pusher resulting in the death of the latter took place during a drug-bust operation at Purok Pagkakaisa, Bgy. Ilayang Iyam, here, before dawn yesterday.
Quezon police director Senior Supt. Osmundo de Guzman said the suspect, identified as Randolf Coronado, 27, sustained bullet wounds and died on the spot.
In a report he submitted to Calabarzon police director Chief Supt. Edward Carranza, De Guzman said Coronado was included on the drug watchlist of Lucena Police Station and has been under tight watch by City Drug Enforcement Unit (CDEU) operatives led by Chief Insp. Jose Danilo Llave.
City police director Supt. Romulo Albacea said the shootout happened at 3:30 a.m. while CDEU operatives were conducting the drug-bust operation at said village, whose target was Coronado.
In a phone interview, Albacea said poseur-buyer PO3 Henry Mago after receiving a plastic sachet containing 0.36 grams of suspected shabu from Coronado was about to do the arrest but the latter, who was armed with a cal. .38 revolver, resisted and fired while running away.
“But PO3 Pedro Wagan, who served as back up of PO3 Mago from behind, quickly retaliated hitting Coronado,” said Albacea.
Albacea said SOCO operatives who processed the crime scene recovered five plastic sachets containing 1.8 grams of suspected shabu, a marked P500 bill and the cal. .38 revolver used by the slain suspect.
He said the operation was witnessed by Barangay Captain Bartolome Comia, Councilman Amelito Abellanosa and media representative Tony Sandoval.
