TAGKAWAYAN, QUEZON— The principal suspect in the rape- slay of a 10 year- old autistic girl in Tayabas City was shot dead by police operatives during a pursuit operation at Bgy. Aldaboc, this town on Wednesday.
Quezon police director Col. Audie Madrideo said farmer Mauro Gravamen, alias Papa Jun, 60, and resident of Bgy. Ibabang Alsam, Tayabas City suffered gunshot wound and died instantly.
Madrideo said the pursuing policemen were about to arrest Gravamen at his hideout but the latter pulled a hand grenade from his bag and tried to pull its pin prompting the lawmen to shoot him.
“Despite a warning shot, he (Gravamen) tried to pull the grenade’s pin but the pursuing cops did not allow him to do it by shooting him”, said Madrideo.
Gravamen was identified by witnesses as the last person seen with Grade 5 pupil Kaycee Oabel, 10, before the latter was found dead at the forested and hilly area of Bgy. Ilayang Alsam, Tayabas City on the morning of February 21.
The girl’s face and different parts of the body bore wounds believed to have been caused by a blunt instrument.
Scene of the Crime Officers who were requested to process the crime scene disclosed that the girl was raped several times before she was killed.
The victim who has been suffering from autism spectrum disorder was last seen alive at around 5 p.m. of February 19 at the said barangay.
Madrideo said that during follow-up investigation by Tayabas City police, Rosalina Janilano, live-in partner of the suspect, told probers in a sworn statemet that the latter admitted the crime to her shortly before he went on hiding.
In a statement by one Marvin Exhija, he claimed to have seen the suspect while handing money to the victim before the crime was discovered.
At around 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday, the pursuing policemen finally located the suspect inside his hideout at Brgy. Aldaboc, Tagkawayan in Southern Quezon where he was eventually killed after resisting arrest.
