THE National Bureau of Investigation arrested a suspect in the gruesome killing of 16-year-old student Christine Lee Silawan in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.

Police Regional Office 7 director Chief Supt. Debold Sinas said the 17-year-old suspect broke down during interrogation by NBI Region 7 operatives and confessed to the killing of Silawan.  The suspect, a boyfriend of Silawan, identified his two accomplices, whose names were temporarily withheld.

NBI Central Visayas Regional Director Tomas Enrile refused to identify the young suspect as investigations are ongoing.

The suspect was turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development office in Region 7 for safekeeping while authorities are documenting the case.

Enrile said the boy was the last person seen with Silawan based on a CCTV footage.

Local reports quoted the NBI regional director as saying the boy committed the crime out of jealousy.

Silawan was found naked from the waist down and lifeless in Sitio Mahayahay in Bgy. Bangkal, Lapu-Lapu City last March 11. She was stabbed 30 times and her face was peeled off by the killers.

Sinas said with the latest development, Jason Bueno, a “person of interest” in the case, was momentarily removed from the list of possible suspects.

Bueno became a “person of interest” after it turned out that he is also wanted for the murder of Trinidad Batucan in Carmen, Cebu, whose mode of killing was similar to that of Silawan’s.
