Bullet-proof vest saves life of cop during drug buy-bust

A BULLET-PROOF vest on Sunday night saved the life of a police anti-narcotics agent who was shot by a drug dealer in Talisay City, Cebu.

Cpl. Renante Academia could have been killed on the spot after being shot in the chest by suspect Mylen Batayola if he was not wearing his body armor, said Police Regional Office 7 director Brig. Gen. Debold Sinas.

“Cpl. Academia’s bullet-proof vest literally saved him from death,” said Sinas as he paid tribute to the brave drug enforcement officer of the Talisay City Police Station.

Members of the Talisay City police targeted Batayola in a buy-bust operation in Bgy. Cansojong in Talisay City at 8 p.m. on Sunday.

However, the suspect  sensed he was dealing with a policeman and immediately pulled out a gun and fired shots at Academia.

The suspect then retreated to his house while firing his gun and eventually managed to escape.     Batayola is the subject of a massive manhunt by the Cebu Police Provincial Office.

According to Sinas, the bullet fired by the suspect failed to penetrate Cpl. Academia’s body.

The policeman was immediately rushed to the Talisay District Hospital for treatment of superficial wounds on the  chest. He was released after treatment.

Sinas said Academia will be given a Philippine National Police’s “Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting”  and “Medalya ng Kagalingan” for his feat.

will likewise undergo a stress debriefing before he is allowed to return to his normal duties.

Sinas ordered an inspection of all bullet-proof vests issued to their police personnel in the aftermath of the incident.
