Cebu boy, 5, dies in culvert fall

CENTRAL Visayas policemen have offered their prayers and help to the family of a 5-year old boy who died after falling in an uncovered box culvert  located beside their house in Pardo, Cebu City at the height of the heavy rains last Saturday.

Police Regional Office 7 director, Brigadier General Debold M. Sinas sent financial assistance and flowers to the family of John Clarke Ebua, the boy whose dream of becoming a policeman was cut short by a tragic accident last week.

The victim was playing in the rain in Barangay Basak-Pardo last Saturday afternoon when he accidentally fell into the uncovered box culvert. After nearly 27 hours, rescuers found the boy’s body at the opening of the Tagunol Bridge which is located about a kilometer away from the culvert.

Police and civilian authorities said that the uncovered culvert was found full of garbage and has to be cleaned before being closed. An investigation is also still underway on who should be responsible for the obvious failure to cover the deep culvert amid concerns that it was really ‘an accident waiting to happen.’

The victim’s wake is being held in a local chapel in Bgy. Kinasang-an Pardo before being transferred to Dumanjug, Cebu where he will be laid to his final resting place on Sunday.
