Cebu cop-cum-casino loan shark shot dead

December 23, 2018

FOUR still unidentified suspects early yesterday morning gunned down a Central Visayas policeman shortly after he left the Cebu Waterfront Casino early yesterday morning

Police Officer 2 Romeo Jumalon, detailed at the PRO7 Regional Personnel Holding and Administrative Unit, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died on the spot during the attack which took place in Sitio Centro, Barangay Pit-os, Cebu City around 4:10 a.m., according to Police Regional Office 7 director Chief Superintendent Debold M. Sinas.

Sinas said local policemen are still tracking down the gunmen who fled in a gray Toyota Vios after the attack.

“Based on initial findings of Cebu City police investigators, the possible motive behind the incident is personal grudge. Apparently, many casino loan sharks in the area have been squabbling in an effort to control the loan shark business in the casino,” Sinas said.

The official said initial investigation showed that the victim had just left the Waterfront Casino and was on his way home when shot right after he alighted from his vehicle.

A record check showed that PO2 Jumalon had just been reinstated from the Philippine National Police service in November 2016, more than four years after he was dropped from the PNP rolls after going on an AWOL status on August 3, 2012. He was assigned to the PRO7 Regional Headquarters Support Group last April 15.

Sinas said PO2 Jumalon was known for acting as a security escort of retired PNP Colonel Ariel Falcuto whom he described as a casino loan financier and close relative of wanted Central Visayas drug lord Peter Lim.

The slain policeman also served as a driver of retired PNP Deputy Chief for Administration Deputy Director General Marcelo P. Garbo Jr. when he was still the PRO7 director.

Sinas said they have received information that the slain policeman had gained notoriety for being seen frequently at the VIP section of the casino where he is known to be lending money to Korean clients.
