Cop killed in New People’s Army ambush

SUSPECTED New People’s Army guerrillas shot dead a policeman and wounded another after they ambushed the two using improvised explosive devices in Motiong, Samar early morning yesterday, officials said.

The victims were on board a Kia Mahindra patrol vehicle when they were waylaid by the gunmen along the Maharlika Highway in Barangay 1, Motiong municipality around 7:15 in the morning.

The vehicle was first hit by two successive explosions before the first volley of rebel fire killed Police Officer 3 Glenn Meniano and injured PO1 Jane Abejar.  The two were on their way to the Motiong Municipal Police Station when attacked by the suspects near the municipality’s cockpit arena.

The suspected leftist gunmen who were armed with M-16 automatic rifles fled immediately.

After being hit, PO3 Meniano lost control of the vehicle and caused it to crash into the highway’s steel barrier. An explosion also heavily-damaged the patrol vehicle.

Police Regional Office 8 director, Chief Superintendent Dionardo B. Carlos led the entire Eastern Visayas police force in condemning the ambush which also resulted in injuries to a civilian identified as Silvestre Igdalino.

According to Carlos, PO1 Abejar told investigators that they were on their way to their station when they were met with the two successive explosions and later automatic gunfire from the suspects.

The official said that PO1 Abejar was hit by shrapnel in the different parts of her body but was able to run for safety. First responders took her to the nearest hospital for medical attention.

Carlos immediately rushed to the ambush site to supervise the investigation into the attack and the hunt for the gunmen.
