AT least seven heavily-armed men believed to be involved in banditry and other illegal activities in Cotabato province were killed in a gunbattle with security forces in Midsayap town early morning Wednesday, Police Regional Office 12 director, Brigadier General Alfred S. Corpus said yesterday.
In a report to Philippine National Police Officer-in-Charge, Lieutenant General Arche Francisco F. Gamboa, the official said that the slain suspects were among the 10 gunmen who clashed with members of the Midsayap Municipal Police Station and the Army’s 34th Infantry Battalion in Sitio Narra, Barangay Tumbras past 5 a.m. Wednesday.
Corpus said the lawmen were about to serve a search warrant for illegal possession of firearms and explosives against the suspects when they started firing prompting the lawmen to retaliate.
The official said that officers later recovered the bodies of the seven suspects including their suspected leader identified as Mama Macalimbol.
Five assorted high-powered firearms and several live ammunition were also recovered from the possession of the suspects.
No casualty was reported on the side of the government during the clash which erupted for nearly 30 minutes, said Corpus.
