SAN ANTONIO, Nueva Ecija -- The first casualty in Nueva Ecija politics in the run-up to next year’s midterm polls was reported in this first-class municipality with the murder of a councilor-candidate here on Friday afternoon.
Chief Insp. Marlon D. Cudal, town police chief yesterday identified the fatality as Allan Joson, 42, of Purok 3, Bgy. Julo, this town, an independent candidate for councilor.
He was formerly elected as the town’s number one councilor before losing the vice mayoral race in the 2016 local polls here.
Cudal said the victim filed his certificate of candidacy just before the municipal elections office closed its office on Wednesday afternoon, the last day of CoC filing.
Joson was standing on the street a few meters from his house talking to his neighbors when he was shot several times by a lone motorcycle-riding armed man on board an orange Yamaha Mio at 4:25 p.m.
Cudal said the victim, who was wearing shorts, sustained several gunshot wounds that caused his instantaneous death while the suspect immediately fled.
He said the motive behind the killing, including politics, is still being investigated.
Recovered at the crime scene were several fired cartridge cases for Cal. 9mm pistol.
Cudal said the victim was not related to the Joson political family, who reigned in the province for several decades.
