CPP/NPA leader, 2 pals killed in Baguio gunfight

SECURITY forces early morning yesterday shot and killed a top Communist Party of the Philippines/New People’s Army leader and his two companions during a gunbattle which erupted while they were trying to arrest the latter inside a Baguio City subdivision, Cordillera Police Regional Office director, Brigadier General R’win S. Pagkalinawan said.

Slain during the 3:30 a.m. firefight inside no. 10 Hamada Subdivision in Lourdes Subdivision Extension, Barangay Queen of Peace, Baguio City were Julius Soriano Giron alias ‘Ka Terro/Zoilo/Tatay/Lakay,’ described as the acting chairman of the CPP Central Committee and at the same time  chairman and head of the CPP/NPA National Military Commission; his still unidentified security aide and one Lourdes Tan Torres alias ‘Ma. Lourdes Dineros Tangco/Tita,’ said to be an Executive Committee member of the CPP/NPA’s National Health Bureau.

According to Pagkalinawan, members of the Philippine Army’ 503rd Brigade, the National Capital Regional Police Office, the Cordillera PRO and the Baguio City Police Office launched a joint law enforcement operation to arrest Giron on the strength of a warrant of arrest for murder, frustrated murder and arson issued by Judge Ferdinand Baylon of the National Capital Judicial Region.

Judge Baylon also issued a search warrant for violation of Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulations Act of 2013 against Giron, the official said.

“During the service of the search warrant and warrants of arrest, Giron and his two companions resisted arrest and started a firefight,” said Pagkalinawan.

The official said that the firefight resulted in the killing of Giron, Torres and Giron’s alleged security aide who was described as another CPP/NPA member.

Recovered from the possession of the slain suspects were one chamber-loaded M-16 automatic rifle with a long magazine with several live ammunition, two chamber-loaded caliber .45 pistols, three hand grenades, a laptop computer, three mobile phones and one USB.

The incident is still being investigated as of press time. Pagkalinawan said that Giron is also known as the concurrent head of the CPP/NPA’s Northern Luzon Commission who also goes by the aliases ‘Lakay/Teryo/Teddy/Guido/Fernandez/Jerry Lopez/Jovito Giron.’
