RAWIS, Legazpi City -- Department of Health officials, under the Department of Education (Dep-Ed) Regional oLOffice 5, are screening some 8,000 athletes for symptoms of measles or “tigdas,” before leaving for Masbate for the “Palarong Bicol” which the city is hosting from Feb. 24 to March 2.
Dr. Israel Parra, medical officer for DepEd Regional Office 5, said the screening was ordered by DepEd Bicol director Gilbert Sadsad.
To safeguard the student-athletes from measles, medical teams composed of nurses and physicians from the Schools Division Offices in Bicol provinces will accompany the delegation of each Bicol province while participating in the “Palarong Bicol.”
Based on DoH records, that afflicted patients with measles in the region as of Feb. 19 is now 236.
Ranking province with the most measles cases is Camarines Sur with 67 cases; Masbate, 61; Sorsogon, 52; Albay, 41; Cam. Norte, 12; Catanduanes province remains as the only locality in the region with no case of measles.
