Drug war claims 2 more lives, nets 16 in stings

TWO suspected drug peddlers were killed while 16 others were arrested in separate buy-bust operations in Quezon, Nueva Ecija and Bulacan.

In Candelaria, Quezon, an anti-drug operation on Sunday turned bloody when a newly-identified drug suspect was killed after allegedly grabbing the service pistol of a policeman conducting an anti-drug surveillance at Purok 5 in Bgy. Malabanban Sur.

Suspect Mike Rhyan Magcawas of Bgy. Sta. Teresita, Sto. Tomas, Batangas, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead on arrival at the Candelaria District Hospital.

Quezon police director Col. Audie Madrideo said PSsg Samuel Merluza, 38, sustained lacerated wounds on the palm and bruises on the arm in a scuffle with the suspect.  

Merluza was brought to the same hospital for treatment.

Town police commander Lt. Col. Jezreel Calderon said his men were conducting surveillance following reports that a drug selling was in progress.

“My men were conducting surveillance when they were spotted by Magcawas, prompting him (suspect) to run away, resulting in the fall of his cal. 38 revolver,” said Calderon.

The cops chased Magcawas until Merluza finally cornered the suspect.

“Magcawas managed to grab Merluza’ service Berreta cal. 9mm pistol after a short brawl and eventually opened fire but missed,” Calderon said.

Merluza’ s fellow officers shot the suspect.

In Nueva Ecija, police shot dead a suspected drug trafficker in an armed encounter in San Jose City and arrested 13 other drug suspects in separate anti-narcotics operations in the province.

In San Jose City, police head Lt. Col. Heryl Bruno identified the slain suspect as Christian Limuel De Guzman, 31, of Bgy. Linglingay, Science City of MuHoz.

De Guzman traded shots with undercover lawmen after consummating a drug deal in Bgy. Calaocan.

Provincial police head Col. Leon Victor Rosete said operatives of the Provincial Intelligence Branch arrested five men sniffing shabu while having drinks in a house near an irrigation canal in Bgy. Bitas.

Rosete identified the five as house owner Jerome Antonio, Rhyan Monetra, Raniel Tabigne, Jovel Montera, and Dave Paraj, who all yielded a plastic sachet containing shabu and some drug paraphernalia.

In Talavera, police conducted a buy-bust operation in Bgy. Pula and caught four suspects while using pot.  The arrested were identified as Jojit Reyes, 41, Alberto Lacsamana alias “Betong,”40;  Mark Midrano alias “Mac,”  32; and Edna Midrano, all of Bgy. Pula.

In another Talavera drug sting, suspect Sonny Boy Antonio of Bgy. Mabini Homesite, San Jose City allegedly fainted when anti-drug operatives nabbed him in Bgy. San Miguel na Munti at 11:45 p.m. on  Sunday. Lawmen rushed him to a nearby hospital.

Three other drug suspects were arrested in the towns of San Isidro and Cabiao and in the Science City of MuHoz. They were Paolo Villamor, 22, of Bgy. Sto. Cristo, San Isidro; Steve Pakingking, 38, of Bgy. San Roque, Cabiao; and Reynaldo Luquinas Milnda alias “Amang,” 50, of Bgy. Maligaya, Science City of MuHoz.  

In Bulacan three drug traffickers also on Sunday were arrested by the police in separate buy-bust operations.

The suspects were identified as Jomar Fajardo, 24; Emereson Reyes, 43; and Jose Rupa Jr., 24.

Fajardo and Reyes, both residents of Bgy. Poblacion in Pulilan municipality, were arrested in an anti-narcotics operation conducted by operatives of the Pulilan Municipal Police Station Drug Enforcement Unit.

Rupa, a truck driver residing at 16 Pascual Street in Baesa, Quezon City, was arrested in a drug buy-bust in EMA Town Ville, Bgy. Camalig, Meycauayan City.
