Drunk ECQ violator dies on way to medical exam

SAN LEONARDO, Nueva Ecija -- A drunk jobless man arrested for not wearing face mask and for acting rude to police patrollers in violation of anti-COVID-19 protocols allegedly died of cardiac arrest when about to be taken to a hospital for medical examination here on Friday night.

Police head Major Jeffrey Alivia identified the dead suspect as Salvador Mariano, of Bgy. Rizal, this town.

He allegedly died shortly after his arrest at 9: 40 p.m. and after he was brought to the police station to undergo investigation and medical examination.

However, when his men were about to escort Mariano to the Gapan District Hospital for the routine medical examination of arrested suspects, Alivia said he suddenly collapsed, prompting the police to rush him to the nearby Gonzales General Hospital along the Maharlika Highway for emergency treatment.

Earlier, patrolling cops accosted Mariano in Bgy. Mambangnan after he was spotted not wearing a face mask while under the influence of liquor. He also arrogantly replied when questioned by the police.

At the hospital, Alivia said the suspect was declared dead-on-arrival by an attending physician with cardiac arrest as the initial cause of death.

He said the suspect's cadaver was brought to the Junlen Funeral here for autopsy while further investigation is still being undertaken about the incident.
