SAN JOSE CITY, Nueva Ecija – A 51-year-old farmer yesterday was found dead when he fell asleep after allegedly drinking lambanog (local coconut wine) with his friends on Monday.
City police commander Supt. Marco Dadez identified the victim as Jessie Pontino of Zone 6, Sitio Dilaen, Bgy. Abar 2nd, this city.
Pontino was discovered dead at 2 a.m. yesterday.
Prior to his death, the victim, along with his friends, started drinking lambanog at 9 a.m. on Monday in a birthday bash at a friend’s house, where he was one of the invited guests.
Pontino fell asleep at the height of the celebration, said PO2 Mark Joseph Vitalista.
Recovered at the place of incident was a big plastic gallon containing a small amount of green-colored flavored lambanog.
According to Vitalista, the said alcoholic drink was brought to the party by a son of the birthday celebrator.
“Madami naman silang uminom ng lambanog, pero siya lang naman ang nagkaganito,” he told this writer yesterday.
Vitalista said they are not discounting the possibility that the victim had other ailments, which may have caused his sudden death.
SPO1 Eric Martin said the victim and the other drinkers had been warned by retired cop “Kapitan” Rolando Salonga of the danger of drinking lambanog, which may contain high levels of methanol but the group did not heed his advice.
To determine the cause of death, Dadez said the victim’s body will be subjected to autopsy while the recovered leftover lambanog was taken for laboratory examination.
