Ecija LGU to pay for cremation services of poor COVID-19 patients

CABANATUAN CITY – Nueva Ecija Gov. Aurelio M. Umali yesterday said the provincial government will shoulder the cremation expenses incurred by poor patients who died due to the coronavirus-19 disease.

The governor said this is one way of easing the financial burden of poor Novo Ecijano families who already lost their loved ones due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Sa ganitong paraan ay hindi na alalahanin pa ng naulilang pamilya ang gastos sa cremation na mas inirerekomenda ng Department of Health," said Umali, chair of the NE-inter-agency task force on COVID-19.

According to a Department of Health guideline, all COVID-19 patients who died must be cremated within 12 hours after death. Also, embalming the body and holding a wake or vigil for the dead victim are also strictly prohibited under the said DOH circular.

Meanwhile, Father Arnold M. Abelardo, spokesperson of NE-IATF urged those concerned to pray for the eternal repose of the souls of COVID-19 patients who perished as well as their surviving family members.
