SAN Isidro, Nueva Ecija -- A market vendor allegedly mired in over P.697 million worth of debt was found floating dead at the Pampanga River in what authorities believed was a case of suicide being committed by the victim, police said yesterday.

Chief Insp. Steven dela Cruz, town police commander, identified the fatality as Rodolfo Santos, 52, of Bgy. Poblacion, this town.

Reports said the man left the house last Tuesday at 2 p.m. without telling anybody where he was going until his body was found floating in the river in Bgy. Poblacion Thursday morning.

Probers said the victim was in deep financial trouble, incurring immense debts amounting to over P697,000 loaned from various persons and lending institutions.

Dela Cruz also said this drove Santos to pawn an inherited residential land in Bgy. Poblacion to cover his debts but this was opposed by immediate members of his family because his plan could backfire and would only worsen the situation.

He said probers were looking at the incident as a suicide after seeing no notable signs of physical injuries on his body except for an incised wound on the victim’s left wrist which could mean he was trying to end his life before he jumped into the river.
Dela Cruz said the victim’s relatives also waived the conduct of an autopsy on his body.

He said the flash alarm about the victim’s disappearance was also immediately lifted by the police upon discovery of his body.
