Ex-Bayan Muna spokesman gunned down

A FORMER spokesman of Bayan Muna yesterday was shot dead while on his way to work in Naga City, Camarines Sur.

Slain was Neptali Morada, 40.

The victim was also a former regional head of Bayan Muna in Bicol.

Morada was traveling on a motorcycle to the Camarines Sur Capitol Hall in Pili town where he worked as a staff member of former Vice Gov. Ato Peña when shot by the suspects in Bgy. San Isidro at 7:30 a.m. yesterday.

Responding policemen found at the crime scene six empty shells.

The killing occurred two days after two activists, Ryan Hubilla and Nelly Bagasala, were also slain in a gun attack on Saturday in Sorsogon.

Hubilla and Bagasala were said to be members of the human rights group Karapatan.

Agents of the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group and the Police Regional Office 5 are jointly investigating the killing of Hubilla and Bagasala.

PNP chief Director General Oscar Albayalde said they are also investigating if Hubilla and Bagasala are really members of Karapatan or not.

“We also have to establish kung talagang member ‘yan. Who knows, baka tine-take advantage lang din nila ‘yan or they’re saying that ito ay member. You know these people, they take advantage on almost everything. Kaya kailangan nila i-prove kung talagang member nila ‘yan. Even us, kailangan nating i-confirm whether they are members of Karapatan or not,” Albayalde said.

The two were shot dead by motorcycle-riding gunmen in Seabreeze Homes Subdivision, Bgy. Cabid-an in Sorsogon.

“With regards to that incident na kine-claim na members of Karapatan, the case is being jointly investigated by the CIDG and local police. Wala pa kaming update but we will provide as soon as we get the report from our units on the ground,” PNP-CIDG director Maj. Gen. Amador Corpus told newsmen.

Police Regional Office 5 director Brig. Gen. Arnel Escobal has ordered a thorough investigation into the gun attacks on activists.

The left-leaning Bayan Muna party-list group condemned the attacks on their members.
