STA. ROSA, Nueva Ecija -- A former barangay treasurer on Sunday was shot dead by a lone motorcycle-riding gunman in this town.
Killed was Joel Castelo, 59, the former treasurer of Bgy. Burgos and a freelance sub-contractor of small government projects.
Maj. George Calauad Jr., police officer-in-charge, said the victim sustained two gunshot wounds in the neck and back and died on the spot.
Castelo was walking home around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday when the motorbike-riding suspect described as wearing a bull cap, black jacket and a face mask came from behind and shot him repeatedly before fleeing towards Sta. Rosa town proper.
Cpl. Marlon Jimenez, case investigator, said the victim was rushed to the Nueva Doctors Hospital in nearby Cabanatuan City but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.
Four fired cartridges of still unknown type of gun caliber were found in the crime scene.
“Dati po siyang barangay treasurer sa Burgos at nangongontrata ng kahit saan, small time lang daw po,” Jimenez said in a text message.
