STA. ROSA, Nueva Ecija -- A former barangay treasurer was shot dead by a lone motorcycle-riding gunman while the former was walking on his way home here on Sunday afternoon.
Killed was Joel Castelo, 59, former barangay treasurer of Bgy. Burgos, and also a freelance sub-contractor engaged in small government projects.
Major George Calauad Jr., police officer-in-charge, said the Castelo sustained two gunshot wounds in the neck and at the back that caused his instantaneous death.
Investigation showed the victim was on his way home at 12:30 p.m. when the motorcycle-riding gunman, described as wearing a bull cap, black jacket and a face mask, came from behind and shot him repeatedly before fleeing towards south direction going to Sta. Rosa town proper.
Corporal Marlon Jimenez, case investigator, said the victim was rushed to the Nueva Doctors Hospital in nearby Cabanatuan City but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.
Recovered from the crime scene were four fired cartridges of still unknown type of gun caliber.
"Dati po siyang barangay treasurer sa Burgos at nangongontrata ng kahit saan, small time lang daw po," Jimenez said in his text message to this reporter yesterday, when asked about any additional data about the victim's background.
