A FORMER Ombudsman investigator accused of robbery-extortion was arrested by undercover policemen in an entrapment operation in Cagayan de Oro City around 11:30 a.m. Friday.
Police Regional Office 10 director, Brigadier General Rolando B. Anduyan said the sting was triggered by complaints from local police recruits who accused the suspect of demanding P30,000 from each of them in exchange for non-filing of administrative cases against them before the Office of the Ombudsman.
Anduyan identified the arrested suspect as Jonathan Pineda, 47, of Block 4, Lot 5, Gold City, Balulang, Cagayan de Oro City who was described as a former Ombudsman investigator in Region 10.
The official said the suspect was arrested at BDO Carmen along Max Suniel Street during an entrapment operation launched by members of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Station 2 led by Captain Ernesto Sanchez and officers from the PRO10 Regional Investigation and Detective Management Division and Regional Intelligence Division and Special Operations Unit.
Anduyan said that prior to the sting, students from the Regional Training School 10 complained that the suspect was demanding P30,000 from each of them and threatened to file administrative charges against them before the Ombudsman that will prevent them from entering the police force.
The Northern Mindanao police director said that during the sting, officers watched from a distance as the accused talked with one of the recruits. Shortly after the recruit handed him the marked money, the suspect was placed under arrest.
Anduyan said the suspect is facing charges for robbery-extortion.
