POLICE are investigating a member of the Lanao del Sur Police Provincial Office who shot and killed a 53-year old farmer who allegedly attacked him with a bolo late Saturday evening.
Police Regional Office 10 director, Brigadier General Rolando B. Anduyan, identified the cop as Patrolman Francis Barason,33, a member of the PRO10’s 1002nd Regional Mobile Force Battalion station in Sapang Dalaga, Misamis Occidental.
The official said that the policeman immediately surrendered to officers of the Lala Municipal Police Station shortly after the incident in Purok 4, Barangay Darumawang in Ilaya, Lala municipality at 10:55 p.m. Saturday.
According to the Lanao del Norte Police Provincial Office, the accused also turned over his service caliber 9mm Glock pistol with one magazine containing seven live ammunition and a spent 9mm casing after presenting his police identification card.
Lala police chief, Major Jonan Bañas said that their investigation showed that Barason was sleeping in his room when he was awakened by a commotion outside.
It turned out that his neighbors including the slain man identified as Rico Montalaban were having a drinking session when the latter reportedly went unruly and punched the father of his live-in partner Meriam Roda.
The woman immediately asked the policeman’s help in pacifying the farmer
The cop claimed that when he went outside his residence, he saw the farmer wielding a bolo and was about to attack Roda’s father. When he intervened and asked the farmer to surrender peacefully, the man allegedly vented his ire on him and hacked him in his left leg.
Pat. Barason said he was forced to fire thrice at the man in self-defense. The farmer reportedly ran inside his house while Barasona surrendered to the local police who later brought him to a local hospital for treatment.
The farmer was eventually found in his house and was taken by responding policemen to the Kapatagan Provincial Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival by an attending physician due to two gunshot wounds in the chest and one in his right arm.
Recovered at the scene were two 9mm cartridges and a bloodstained bolo said to have been used by the slain man.
