AGENTS of the Philippine National Police - Criminal Investigation and Detection Group early yesterday morning raided the houses of the mayor and vice mayor of Batuan, Masbate amid reports that the politicians are maintaining partisan armed groups and loose weapons, a report to PNP chief Director General Oscar Albayalde said.
PNP-CIDG chief Director Amador Corpus said that recovered at the house of Batuan Mayor Charmax Jan Yuson alias “Mac-Mac” in Bgy. Canvanez were one M-16 Bushmaster automatic rifle, one loaded magazine and a fragmentation grenade.
Seized inside the Yuzon Beach Resort owned by Vice Mayor Charlie Yoson III alias “Bodgie/Big Boss” were one Baby Armalite rifle, two 12-gauge shotguns, one cal. .45 pistol and a hand grenade.
Members of the CIDG Regional Unit 5, the PNP Special Action Force, PNP Drug Enforcement Group, the Police Regional Office 5 Regional Mobile Force Battalion, Masbate Police Provincial Office and the Batuan Municipal Police Station conducted the simultaneous raids at 6:30 a.m. yesterday on the strength of a search warrant for violation of Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulations Act of 2013.
Corpus said one of the targets of the raid, Jeason Clemente Cabantac, was arrested. However, the mayor and his vice mayor as well as Severo Escote Basas alias “Beroy,” an incumbent kagawad of Bgy. Canvanez, were not around during the search and are being hunted by the police.
PNP spokesman Sr. Supt. Bernard Banac said that the simultaneous raids were part of the PNP’s intensified campaign against loose firearms and partisan armed groups that may be used to disrupt the May 13 national and local elections.
