December 08, 2018

A HERO’S burial will be accorded the honest agent of the Philippine National Police Highway - Patrol Group who was shot dead by a man he was trying to accost for driving a suspected stolen vehicle in Cagayan de Oro City last Wednesday, officials told People’s Journal yesterday.

“SPO1 Sergs de Constantine Maceren will be given appropriate funeral honors befitting a fallen hero. We also have provided assistance to the orphaned family of Maceren, a real exceptional police officer worthy of emulation by all police personnel,” said PNP-HPG director Chief Supt. Roberto Fajardo.

Maceren was shot and killed by armed car driver Abdulrahim Batawi Adilao, a 42-year-old resident of 10237 Bgy. Rosas St., Mabalacat, Pampanga in front of the Petron Gasoline Station in Upper Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City at 3:35 p.m. on Wednesday.

The suspect opened fire on Maceren and also seriously injured the lawman’s colleague, SPO2 Lyndie Baltazar.

Adilao, armed with an M-16 automatic rifle, was also shot during the encounter with members of the Regional Highway Patrol Unit 10 (RHPU10) and died while undergoing treatment in a local hospital.

According to Fajardo, the two members of the RHPU10 Special Operations Team, along with PO1 Joel Laurente, had just filed charges for corruption of public official against two persons who tried to offer them bribe in exchange for the release of their impounded vehicles when they spotted the suspect who was driving a Hyundai Accent with suspicious license plates.

While about to be accosted, the driver shot Baltazar and Maceren in the chest without any reason at all.

Although hit in the shoulder, Baltazar managed to draw his gun and shot the suspect.

Baltazar and Maceren were rushed to the Madonna Hospital, where Maceren died while undergoing treatment.

Fajardo described Maceren as a veteran HPG operative and investigator known for his role in major anti-carnapping operations and for turning down bribes being offered by arrested suspects.
