SAN ANTONIO, Nueva Ecija – A 42-year-old police intelligence officer was gunned down by a lone motorcycle-riding suspect while performing his checkpoint duty here on Thursday night.
Newly-designated police officer-in-charge Major Ador S. Depnag identified the slain policeman as Master Sgt. Bert Reyes, of Bgy. Maugat, this town.
Depnag said he was formerly detailed at the Cabiao police before his reassignment here.
The gun attack was perpetrated by an unidentified lone gunman riding a Yamaha Mio motorcycle at 10:20 p.m.
Depnag said the victim was inside the Luyos barangay hall performing his duty when the suspect went inside and shot him twice on the head before fleeing towards unknown direction.
The victim was rushed to the San Antonio District Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival by Dr. Margarita Pobre, the attending physician.
Recovered at the crime scene were two spent shells for cal. 45 pistol.
Depnag said a special investigation task force had been formed to look into the murder incident.
The attack was some sort of baptism of fire for Depnag, who just assumed his post on Sunday after his stint as a police operations officer at the Cabanatuan police under Lt. Col. Arnel M. Dial.
Depnag replaced erstwhile police chief Major Roderick N. Corpuz, who was reassigned to the Tarlac police provincial office.
